Coastline Plus® Awnings and a 100 mph Wind Rating Limit

Emigsville, Pennsylvania (June 1, 2007) Herculite Products Inc. recently reviewed the product specifications of Coastline Plus® with relationship to a 100 mph wind-rating limit as required by several counties in Florida.

The technical department was quick to point out that the real stress and wind resistance of a Coastline Plus® awning would be generated at the mounting points where the supports are anchored to the building. The engineering of the awning frame structure is critical to the wind resistance of the finished awning. The placement of grommets, rafter bands and truss supports also provide the strength requirements for the finished awning.

There is a formula that equates wind pressure velocity to pressure per square inch on the fabric:

Wind pressure in MPH squared, multiplied by .00256, then divided by 144 = PSI (pressure per square inch on the fabric)

PSI = [V^2 x .00256] / 144

An illustration using a 100 mph wind would be as follows:

100 MPH X 100 = 10,000 X .00256 = 25.6 PSF / 144 = .18 PSI

Using the formula we can determine a 100 MPH wind places approximately .18 PSI on the fabric. The approximate fabric burst strength of Coastline Plus® is 300 PSI.

The strength of a vinyl laminated fabric (which is superior to a coated vinyl of equal weight) is derived from the supporting scrim fabric. Coastline Plus® uses one of the strongest scrim fabrics in the industry. While extremely strong it also provides excellent tear strength and dimensional stability.

In conclusion, the Coastline Plus® fabric by Herculite will meet the requirements of a 100 MPH wind resistance provided the supporting frame construction is properly engineered.

Herculite’s Canopy FS awning fabric offers rain protection for football fans at Super Bowl XLI

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA (February 4, 2007)  The awning canopies at Dolphin Stadium typically provide year round sun protection for sports fans but that was not the case at Super Bowl XLI.

Rain fell over South Florida during the game.  Prince even played his hit song, “Purple Rain” at halftime.  And the Indianapolis Colts were victorious over the Chicago Bears in a super game that had its share of weather related turnovers.  But it was the Awning Canopies that kept the fans dry while they made their entrance and exit from the stadium.

In 2006, Paradise Canvas of Hollywood Florida earned the contract to build the four entrance canopies that cover the primary escalators to the stadium as well as several smaller structures including those at the Miami Dolphin Training Center in Davie, Florida.

The fabric chosen was Canopy FS 120 Turquoise by Herculite Products Inc.  Known for exceptional durability, this 8-year backlit awning fabric is a perfect color match for the Miami Dolphins.  During nighttime at Super Bowl XLI, the canopies illuminated brightly, adding an exciting design element for fans to enjoy while entering the building or tailgating outside.

New Study Proves Awnings Can Save on Energy Costs for Homeowners
Wednesday February 21, 11:26 am ET

Awnings, an increasingly popular home improvement option, provide style, shade, curb appeal and an even greater benefit -- reduced energy costs

ROSEVILLE, Minn., Feb. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study found that awnings can provide significant savings on cooling costs and on peak electrical demand by reducing solar gain through home windows. The study, Awnings in Residential Buildings: The Impact on Energy Use and Peak Demand, was conducted by the Center for Sustainable Building Research at the University of Minnesota.

The Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA) funded the study to determine if awnings are a viable means of reducing energy and air conditioner usage in the home. Most U.S. residential neighborhoods do not have a significant number of awnings, unlike Europe, where awnings are used to reduce air conditioning use in the summer. The study investigated the energy savings for single family homes and the reduction of energy use during peak periods.

In the first phase of the study, awning impacts were measured in seven U.S. cities across various climates, including Minneapolis, Boston, Seattle, Albuquerque, Phoenix, St. Louis and Sacramento. The study revealed that in all cities for all window orientations tested (see tables on page 2), there were significant energy savings in cooling costs and peak electricity demand as a result of using window awnings. The amount of energy saved varies, depending on the number of windows, types of glass in the windows and window orientation. Phase two of the study is due for release in the spring and will include additional cities.

Specifically, the study found that in Phoenix, Ariz., a warm climate, window awnings can reduce the use of home cooling energy as much as 26 percent compared to a home with completely unshaded windows. In St. Louis, Mo., a mixed climate, awnings can reduce the use of cooling energy as much as 23 percent. Similarly, in Boston, Mass., a cold climate, awnings can reduce the need for cooling energy as much as 33 percent.

"Depending on the region a home is in, awnings can save home owners more than $100 annually, but energy savings like this are valuable beyond reducing homeowners' expenses," said Michelle Sahlin, managing director of PAMA. "When numerous homeowners reduce their need for energy, there is less demand for energy at the times of peak usage, resulting in overall savings to utility companies and the public from a decreased need to supply generating capacity."

Researchers used a specialized computer program to investigate variables in conjunction with a standard awning with sides. The variables included geographic location, window orientation and exposure, winter and summer usage, and window type.

For more information about the study, contact Michelle Sahlin at mesahlin@ifai.com
