We’ve all heard the warnings: use sunscreen, stay in the shade, wear a hat, etc… But, each year nearly 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, over the past three decades, more people have been diagnosed with skin cancer than ALL the other cancers combined! So what does this mean to you? It means you have to start thinking about shading yourself and protecting your skin and your loved ones from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun!
We often don’t consider the fact that enjoying a day outside for a party or barbeque is also a day outside in direct sunlight which means you’ll need to protect yourself from UV rays. Here’s a quick list of tips and advice on how to protect yourself from the harmful UV rays of the sun:
- Use sunscreen
- Use a shirt/other clothing to cover your skin
- Wear a hat
- Use sunglasses
- Get out of the sun, shade yourself
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, just because it’s cool outside doesn’t mean UV rays aren’t reaching the ground. I fact, even on cloudy days, UV rays are still reaching the ground. So if you’re outside at an event or party, remember to shade yourself!
Now, if you’re considering an outdoor party, event, or wedding, you’ll want to remember that protecting your loved ones and from UV rays is important. Using Party tents or other fabric structures is one way you can protect your guests.
An example of some excellent fabric that you can use to shade your guests and help protect them from UV rays is Herculite Inc.’s High Performance Tent & Structural Fabrics. These fabrics offer a complete selection of high performance advanced technical textiles custom engineered specifically for the diverse needs of this market. These fabrics are also formulated for resistance to ultra violet degradation and low cold temperature flexibility.
Also the fabrics offer proven resistance to ultra violet rays and atmospheric pollutants for extended life of the tent fabric. You can also get this tent fabric in blackout, which is especially nice if you live in a particularly sunny area and you don’t want any external light from outside coming inside to ruin your party.
So remember, if you’re going to be outside, shade yourself and protect yourself from the sun. Keep in mind, UV rays are most powerful between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. So stay covered and stay cool! And if you’re ever not sure how strong UV rays are at any time of the day, use the shadow test. If your shadow is shorter than you then the UV rays coming from the sun are at their strongest. So remember, use a hat, sunscreen, and if possible, stay in the shade.
